Star Control 2

Post by Tsukiyumi on Sun Jul 07, 2013 8:34 pm

First released for PC in 1992, designed and programmed by only two guys, SC2 is still one of the most well-developed, engrossing, and fun games I've ever played. Graphically, it's more than a bit out of date, but the gameplay, story and open-style play makes it one of the best games ever made, in my (and many others) opinion.

A few years back, the two creators released the game open source after the rights lapsed, though they had to change the name.

There's where you can get it for PC, and they're working on Android and iPad ports. If you've never played it, you need to, and if you have at some point, it's worth playing again just to see how well it's held up.

Exploration/Arcade-style combat/resource gathering/conversation trees (Alien diplomacy)

It's so large-scale that it's hard to believe they pulled it off, and games in the last decade (such as Mass Effect) have been trying to duplicate the style.

Here's some of the different sections of the game

Okay, actually, it seems like most of those are from earlier versions of the open-source port. The finished version (0.7) is identical to the original game, with some improvements in music and graphics.
